Introduction to Al Mukalla, Yemen

Al Mukalla is a major Yemeni port town on the Gulf of Aden, which separates the Red Sea from the Arabian Sea. The town is filled with the fascinating mud brick architecture for which the Hadhramaut region is famous. Al Mukalla hotels are not far from the ancient Hadrami city of Cane (Qana), an important trading post between India and Africa in ancient times. What was once a small fishing settlement is now a thriving sea port, located east of town beneath Al-Ghwayzi Fort, a famous Yemeni monument. The markets in the old town and the shops in Sha'erj have something for travellers of every budget. Be sure to have an evening meal at one of the local restaurants near the fish market and spend an afternoon walking along the Khor canal. Al Qu'aity's Al Ma'een Mukalla Palace is another highlight of Al Mukalla, a stunning Indo-Victorian palace featuring a museum filled with history and artefacts from Sultans' past.
