Introduction to Pontypridd, Wales

Located in the small county of Rhondda Cynon Taf,in the south of Wales, Pontypridd is a large town that is just 12 miles from the capital, Cardiff. With its name meaning bridge by the earthen house in Welsh, the town spans the River Taff. Although a series of old wooden bridges built here hundreds of year ago are no longer standing, the Old Bridge made of stone and dating back more than 250 years is still intact. The town is a well-known haven of music, having spawned the world famous singer Tom Jones as well as members of ACDC and Motorhead, not to mention the writers of the Welsh national anthem. As such, music concerts here are a big draw. There are many interesting old buildings here that date back to the town's heyday as a major centre of the iron and coal industry. Pontypridd hotels are numerous and mostly lie close to the main railway station on the A4058.
