Blaenau Festiniog is a town of under 5,000 inhabitants in the Welsh county of Gwynedd.
The town sits in an elevated natural bowl in the middle of the Moelwyn and Manod mountains of Snowdonia.
The town was built up around the slate industry and despite lying in the centre of Snowdonia National Park, the slate waste tips which surround it prevented the town from being officially included in the park.
Blaenau Festiniog is ideally located for outdoor enthusiasts, with climbing, hiking, canoeing and mountain biking all on offer.
There are a few Blaenau Festiniog hotels located in the town for those that plan on spending a night or two in the area.
One of the main attractions here is the narrow gauge Festiniog Railway, which links to town with the coastal resort of Porthmadog.
The railway was originally opened in 1836 to transport slate from the town to the harbour, but it now provides visitors with a fascinating journey through woodlands and meadows, past lakes and waterfalls, in Snowdonia National Park.
