Aberdare is an industrial Welsh town with a population of just over 30,000 inhabitants.

The town is situated 39kms to the northwest of Cardiff and six kilometres southwest of Merthyr Tydfil.

Aberdare was once considered one of the centres of Welsh culture and hosted the first ever National Eisteddfod.

The town's main arts venue is the Coliseum Theatre, which has a cinema and a 600-seat auditorium, and was built using miners' subscriptions in 1938.
