By air: Phu Bai airport was used in the Vietnam War by the Americans and is still in use today. It’s a small airport facility yet receives daily flights from Saigon and Hanoi, although changing weather may disrupt flights. Hue is 40 minutes away from the airport by taxi. Alternatively, Danang Airport, although two hours away from Hue by car or taxi, is more reliable and offers more flights.
By bus: certainly one down from taking the train, taking a bus to Hue from Hanoi or Saigon can be extremely uncomfortable and arduous, although those who are on a budget will save money. As an example, overnight buses and minivans depart Hanoi and arrive in Hue around 17 hours later. The fare is less than one third of that of an air-conditioned berth on the train, however. Tour buses also come in from Danang, Hoi An, and Nha Trang.
