Ho Chi Minh (Saigon) Travel Guide

Getting There

Getting to Ho Chi Minh (Saigon)
By road: Ho Chi Minh can be reached by road from neighbouring Cambodia however the trip can be lengthy and gruelling for those accustomed to the comfort of travelling by air. The route from Phnom Penh to Ho Chi Minh takes about six to eight hours, with private bus companies operating the route.
If you take the cheaper public bus to the boarder, you will be dropped off in no man’s land and will have the hassle of finding a new bus after crossing. The private tour buses offer the convenience of picking you up on the other side once border formalities are finished and travelling into the city on Highway 22. Buses depart from Phnom Penh twice daily and arrive at 309 Pham Ngu Lao street, District 1.
By air: Tan Son Nhat Airport (SGN) is the country’s most important international air hub. Immigration on arrival can be very time consuming and it is wise to have your paperwork in impeccable order.
Facilities are scarce, with money changing amenities, a duty-free shop, snack bar, lockers and a visitors’ information centre as well as various transport options into the city including meter taxis and a public airport bus. The journey into the city takes about 20 to 30 minutes.
By ferry: it is feasible for travellers to reach Ho Chi Minh via cargo ship from Hong Kong, Japan, Thailand, Singapore or France however there are no official passenger services in operation. The only official ferry service into Vietnam is from Cambodia to Chau Doc in the Mekong Delta, from where you take a bus into the city.
By rail: there are no train lines in operation between Vietnam and its neighbouring countries. Rail does however travel north to Hue and onwards to Hanoi.
