Ho Chi Minh (Saigon) Travel Guide

Getting Around

Getting Around Ho Chi Minh (Saigon)
Longer journeys can be made by public bus, with a single rail route running the length of the country and connecting Ho Chi Minh and Hanoi. Longer distances can be covered by domestic flight, the safest way to travel.
Road: foreigners are not allowed to drive in Vietnam unless they obtain a Vietnamese driving license; International Driving permits are not valid. This makes travelling by bus, taxi or private car (with driver) the only ways in which visitors can navigate Ho Chi Minh’s roads.
Alternative routes include departures from Ben Thanh Market to An Nhon/Thanh Loc or An Suong. Buses operate roughly every 10 to 15 minutes, depending on the route, and run between about 05.00 to 19.30. Bus tickets are purchased on the bus, with fares being standardised for journeys city-wide.
Should you need to take a bus to a destination outside the city limits, there are regular and express links to Nha Trang (12 hours).
Passengers should make sure they have small change with which to pay the driver, or they could find themselves paying a larger tip than expected.
Train: there are no inner-city rail routes in operation, with the only rail line in the county serving the route from Ho Chi Minh to Hanoi (36 hours). The journey is scenic, with trains following the coast. Advance reservations are advised.
Cyclo: (three-wheel bicycle rickshaws) can be an exciting, if not somewhat of a heart-stopping experience. Journeys are cheap and they can be hired for a trip from A to B or for a set time, so that you can tour the city.
Air: domestic air travel is popular in Vietnam due to the great lengths involved in travelling from one end of the county to another by road or train. Air travel is also the safest form of transport in Vietnam. There are daily flights to most major cities from Ho Vhi Minh’s Tan Son Nhat Airport including to Da Nang, NhaTrang and Hanoi, with tickets often available on the day, making advance booking unnecessary.
