Visitors will find daytrips easy to organise, with an abundance of travel agents present throughout the city, who tout for your business and run various day-trips on a daily basis. These are often a much easier option than organizing a trip independently and can work out to be cheaper as they are normally inclusive of lunch. Tours in Vietnam are surprisingly cheap, yet well run and present excellent value.
Cu Chi Tunnels: these series of tunnels, used by Viet Cong forces during the guerrilla warfare of the Vietnam War, can be reached on a daytrip from Ho Chi Minh City, lying 39kms northwest of HCMC.
Mekong Delta: with the Mekong Delta just a stone’s throw away from the city, a trip to see the stunning scenery, where the main river splits into hundreds of different ‘veins’, is a must. Tours take you along some of the more interesting canals, where photo opportunities are abundant, with plentiful shots of passing boats of various sizes, carrying everything from food to livestock.
Vung Tau: a one-hour trip from Ho Chi Minh by hydrofoil, Vung Tau is an easily accessible getaway, offering stunning beaches and a lively nightlife. If you tire of tanning yourself on the beach, try a brisk trek on one of the mountain circuits or alternatively, check out the lighthouse or the Giant Jesus, iconic landmarks of the town. Hydrofoil departures leave from the city every few hours throughout the day.
