Introduction to Sapa, Vietnam
The Indochina peninsula's highest peak, Fansipan Mountain, is the tallest of the majestic mountains surrounding the southwest Vietnamese alpine community of Sapa. It is not uncommon to experience all four seasons within a single day here, and winter temperatures can approach the freezing mark. Sapa hotels with heating fill up fast during the cold winter months, with the cheapest rooms found just downhill from the town centre. Tourists have just recently re-discovered this former hill station that overlooks a breathtaking valley filled with rice paddies near the Chinese border. Hiking to local, ethnic villages is the main activity here, with several communities within easy walking distance and some, such as Cat Cat, allowing for overnight stays. Although the many ethnic minorities here are usually happy to help, talk or sell homemade goods to visitors, some of them do not allow tourists to photograph them. Visit our Sapa Travel Guide
