Introduction to Hoi An, Vietnam
Tucked in the scenic central coast of Vietnam is a real gem that is evocative of an imperial past long relegated to the history books. Hoi An demands to be on the agenda of every traveller with even a slight interest in the local culture. Its Old Town is nothing short of magical, and well-deserved of its UNESCO World Heritage status. The winding lanes lined with Chinese shop houses, temples and other exotic marvels are a real charmer, especially after dark when the historic quarter takes on a romantic ambiance. There's no escaping the obvious element of tourism in Hoi An, but the local character has been well preserved. Akin to a theme park, entry to the many historic attractions in the Old Town is by coupon, allowing visitors to choose the sites that interest them the most. From the Japanese Covered Bridge to Quan Cong Temple, there are plenty of draws to choose from. Four excellent museums exhibit the rich heritage of this ancient imperial city, while handicraft shops and cultural theatres offer a look at the intangible treasures of Hoi An. The Hoi An hotels just north of the Old Town are a good choice for those guests that want to be within walking distance of the ambiance and attractions. Visit our Hoi An Travel Guide
