Festivals and Events in Vanuatu
January Festivals

New Years Day: is a public holiday and much needed after the frenzy of dancing and drinking to bring in the New Year the night before.
February Festivals

John Frum Day (Cargo Cult): is celebrated on Tanna Island by devotees of the Cargo Cult who believe that John Frum will return together with goods from heaven that the westerners have not been sharing with them.

Lini Day: is celebrated to honour the Father of Independence
May Festivals

Hideaway Island Kickgas Classic Dive Festival and Photo Event: the contest has been held each year since 2000 and some of the events included are beach events, snorkelling and swimming. Tutorials are held for participants and cover composition, framing, film choice, camera and other components needed to take good underwater photos.
June Festivals

Espiritu Santo Aore Swim Annual Vanuatu Open Water Swim: runs from Unity Park in Luganville to Aore Resort, about 3kms in a straight line. At the end of the race, traditional dances are usually held to honour the swimmers.
July Festivals

Round Island Relay: runners from all over the world come here to participate in this challenging run that takes them over many different terrains including tar sealed to rugged coral and dirt roads, passing through traditional villages, taking in mountain rainforest, crossing crystal clear streams, along the edge of coral reefs and along white sand beaches offering some of the most spectacular views.
Independence Day: is celebrated with much gusto in Port Vila with a parade, traditional dancers, street stalls, canoe races, magic performers, drinking of kava and many other events throughout the day.
Le Meridien Fun Swim Run and Sprint: is organised each year by the hotel in the spirit of fun.

National Sandroing: this sand drawing festival takes place on the small island of Akhamb for four days. Held annually, the festival is held to honour the close links between sand drawings and inter-island canoe voyaging. Islanders from several other islands also participate in the number of activities on offer such as traditional dances, traditional games and magic shows.
Assumption Day: celebrates the ascent of Virgin Mary’s ascent to heaven. The local Christians attend several special church services.
Tusker Triathlon du Paradis: comprises of three events (swimming, biking and running) and attracts participants from all over the world.
October Festivals

Constitution Day: is held to remember leaders who framed the country’s first laws.
December Festivals

Christmas Day: in the tropics is very different from a white Christmas, but nonetheless just as special. In Vanuatu a candle light service is held on the harbour front and the main street is lit up with fairy lighting. Shops are decorated with images of Santa Claus and Christmas trees.
