Attractions

Attractions in Vanuatu
The French Quarter: in Port Vila is located just to the north of central Vila and features a number of colonial style houses with French louvered windows. Excellent views over the harbour can be had from Rue Emile Mercet.
The Cemetery: in Anabrou merits a visit for those who are interested in old bones and garishly decorated Chinese and Vietnamese gravestones. You can also get an insight into the background of the population of Port Vila here.
The Parliament: a grand, red-roofed Parliament building, stands up on top of the hill above Port Vila. Behind Parliament you can find the ornate Chief’s Nakamal, a national centre for ceremonies.
Vanuatu Post: offers the world’s only Underwater Post Office, located in a marine sanctuary, off Hideaway Island near Port Vila in Vanuatu. If you are a visiting diver or snorkeller, the Post Office can accept mail delivered in person or sent via the Main Post Office to make sure all mail items get the special stamp from this unique underwater paradise.
Pentecost Island: has other attractions than land diving, such as hot springs at Hotwata. Melsisi is a good place to visit kava and cocoa plantations, while remarkable views of Ambrym and its puffing, active volcanoes can be had from the south west of Pentecost.
Erromango Island: is home to Martyrs’ Church at Dillon’s Bay, where small tablets commemorate the preachers who were welcomed with open mouths by the locals who had yet to kick their cannibal habit.
Ambrym Island: is famous for carved tamtams (drums used for ceremonial singing and dancing) and for the sand drawings which tell a story or leave a message. The island’s lava landscape makes visitors feel as if they were on the moon and locals believe it is home to sorcery.
Espiritu Santo: generally known as Santo, is the archipelago’s largest island and features a mountainous landscape shrouded in lush rainforest, with plenty of wildlife such as tropical birds, colourful butterflies and beautiful orchids.
Millennium Cave: is a huge cave deep in the jungle, which measures 20 metres across and 50 metres high. Inside, you can see glittering stalactites and stalagmites, freshwater pools and colonies of tiny bats and swallows, which have built their nests high up in the cave’s roof. Walking tours go to the cave and an average level of fitness is necessary.
Oyster Island: is a tiny but heavenly island covered with palm trees. It shelters behind Mavea Island and is famous for its seafood restaurant. To call for the island’s small boat, drum on the gas cylinder hanging in the tree.
