Introduction to Tashkent, Uzbekistan

Those travelling through central Asia must make a stop at Tashkent, the capital city of Uzbekistan. With a population of over two million in the city proper, the city is deemed as the country’s most cosmopolitan. A large number of hotels in Tashkent are situated close to the area’s tourist sites. The city is noted for its numerous fountains, tree-lined streets, and lovely parks. In the Islamic world, the city is known as a cultural capital for its number of religious establishments and historic mosques. Unfortunately, little remains of the city’s traditional architecture due to the destruction caused during the 1917 revolution and a large earthquake in 1966, which destroyed most of the ancient city. However, Tashkent is still rich in Soviet-era monuments and museums covering this era. An authentic shopping experience can be had at Chorsu Bazaar while numerous mausoleums, including Kaldyrgach-bly Mausoleum and Khavendi Takhur Sheikh Mausoleum, can be visited.
