Introduction to Punta del Este - City Centre
On the southern tip of Uruguay is the upscale resort town of Punta del Este. Although the city centre has a decent representation of colonial architecture, it's the beach that everyone comes here for. In the downtown area, Gorlero Avenue is the main commercial street. It is lined with a great selection of restaurants, bars, shops and travel services. You can also find some of the nicer Punta del Este City Centre hotels along this busy road. There are a few iconic landmarks in the city such as Casapueblo, a massive work of sculpture by one of Uruguay's most famous artists atop Punta Ballena. The lighthouse is another lovely feature of the peninsula and for a daytrip, Goritti Island is the perfect spot to unwind in peace. If you need diversion from the city centre, there are several beaches to choose from around Punta del Este, each with a slightly different character.
