Situated on the northern side of Long Island Sound, Niantic is a popular destination in Connecticut that attracts a steady flow of visitors in summer due to its swimming and sailing in the main bay. There are regular boat races here that cause the surrounding waters to fill with small boats, making for an interesting spectacle for visitors whether they are boating buffs or not. There is also a sandy beach here, a rarity in Connecticut, and a large wooded area away from the coast that attracts hordes of hikers. Other outdoor activities popular here include fishing and camping. Food-wise, scallops, which are usually caught in the nearby waters, although stocks have been in decline in recent years, are a mainstay of the local restaurants. Niantic hotels are numerous in two main areas - Main Street, which cuts across the bay, and further north on Flanders Road, close to the main turnpike on Route 95.
