In the Farmington Valley region, Avon is a northwestern suburb of Connecticut's capital of Hartford.
This historic town is home to a prestigious boarding school for boys, Avon Old Farms, founded and designed by one of the first American female architects, Theodate Pope Riddle.
She and her school were used as inspiration for a novel written by the renowned author and Avon Old Farms graduate Richard Yates.
Pine Grove School House, a historic one-room schoolhouse in town that opened in 1865, was one of the last of its kind, used until 1949.
It is now a museum, as is an 18th century farmhouse nearby.
To the east of the town stands Talcott Mountain of the Metacomet Ridge, accessible from Avon hotels for hiking, skiing and picnicking.
The mountain features a highland swamp boardwalk, rugged woodlands, a number of scenic ponds and reservoirs, and two modest waterfalls as well as the lovely Heublein Tower that dates back to 1914.
