Indio was developed in the early 1900s at the halfway point on the railway line running between Los Angeles and Yuma in Arizona and is a popular tourist destination in the middle of a largely agricultural area.
The many resort hotels in Indio draw many visitors to the city that is known by some people as the city of festivals because of the number of events held here annually.
The two biggest are the Date Festival in February and the world’s largest Tamale Festival in December.
