Introduction to Kiev - Maidan Nezalezhnosti
The central square of Kiev is known as Maidan Nezalezhnosti, or Independence Square, a lively colourful place with an amazingly rich history where locals and tourists come together. Located on Khreschatyk Street, it's one of the city's most important squares and often the site of public rallies, protests or other events. Most recently, it gained worldwide fame as the site of Ukraine's Orange Revolution. The towering monument to Berehynia is the most noticeable landmark in the square, rising above the stately buildings that ring the stone plaza. Bessarabskiy Market and Ukrainian House are two of the cultural highlights just off Maidan Nezalezhnosti. There is also a huge Central Department Store here that is popular with local shoppers. Underneath the square is another giant shopping complex called Globus. Maidan Nezalezhnosti hotels offer guests both the convenience of location and an incredible atmosphere.
