Things to do in Ukraine
Crimea - visit the popular Swallow's Nest
As its name suggests, the Swallows Nest in the Crimea is perched at the top of a high cliff, in the southern part of Ukraine. It looks over Ai Todor Cape on the Black Sea. It was built as a look at point, sometime during the late 19th century. This fairly small look out was designed in a neo-gothic design and is 200 square metres in size. For some of the best and interesting views of the surrounding landscapes, make sure that you take a walk up to, and along, the observation deck.Kiev - see the sun rise at the Golden Gate
The Golden Gate of Kiev has undergone numerous renovations since its original construction back in 1024 with the latest of these being in 1832, expect for the more recently protective pavilion, which was erected in 1970. The gate gets its name not from the materials it is constructed from, but from the golden light that passes through it every morning, as the sun rose. Early risers can still see this affect today.Kiev - stroll the amazing Kiev - Pecherska Lavra
Located in the Dnipro hills is the stunning Kievo Pechersk Lavra. It was built 900 years ago as a place of worship for Christians, and has been an important centre ever since. It is also known as the Monastery of Caves, due to its extensive catacombs and houses and its large collection of religious icons and treasures. The outside is impressive, but the true beauty of the complex, can be seen from the inside.Odessa - walk up the Potemkin Stairs
Energetic visitors can take a walk up the impressive Potemkin Stairs, or as they are more correctly known the Primorsky Stairs. Originally built of sandstone and for access to the harbour, there are 200 steps, with 10 landings. The whole design creates a double optical illusion, with the bottom steps being nearly twice the width of the top ones, giving the impression of much longer length up the steps. The steps have since been replaced with granite and there are now only 192. Introduction to Ukraine
