The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is a conglomerate of seven sheikdoms that each maintains their sovereignty, and that are truly a phenomenon in this traditionally conservative Islamic part of the world. Situated on the Arabian Peninsula’s south-eastern tip, this union was formed at the time the British withdrew from the Gulf region in 1971.
