A short drive out of the city will take you to lovely, quiet beaches; and also not far away, in neighbouring Fujairah, scuba diving opportunities abound.
Having a car at your disposal is a much preferred means to get around – rather than using the local buses or similar public transportation, as service is irregular, vehicles are crowded and the heat can be quite oppressive.
Back on land, 4-wheel adventure awaits in the desert and the dry, rocky riverbeds known as wadis. The scenery in the area is magnificent, boasting brilliant green date groves set among the towering peaks of the Hajar Mountains.
Jumeirah Archaeological Site: a visit to this site is worthwhile and it’s quite easy to reach from the city. The site is located at the mouth of a creek, and dates from the 6th century. It’s the largest archaeological excavation in the UAE; and you’ll see the remnants of many of the settlement’s stone walls, houses, a palace and several souqs.
Diving Village: not far away from the city of Dubai is a diving village that’s part of an ambitious plan aimed at transforming the whole Sindagha area into a time capsule of sorts – which would re-create an earlier period in the life and times of this part of the Gulf region.
