Also, many international fast food restaurants, such as McDonald’s and Wimpy, are represented here; as are international theme restaurants, such as Hard Rock Cafe. For those in search of Middle Eastern and Gulf food, the options are plentiful.
A range of choices of international cuisines is typically found at the restaurants of the better hotels – and also at numerous clubs and other venues popular with tourists. You’ll find the quality of the international food on offer to be high; however, you’re also encouraged to sample the local specialities. Vegetarians will find plenty of choice, particularly on Arab and Indian menus.
Local specialities include breads, pastries, grilled meats, rice dishes and salads – and also hummus (a combination of mashed chickpeas, with oil, garlic, sesame and spices, blended into a dip) and shawarma (a meat and salad roll).
Most of the souks are filled with food stalls selling local dishes at low prices – and generous portions. The standards of hygiene are good at the food stalls, but if you are concerned about eating at this type of establishment, there are alternatives for trying local and regional fare – such as the highly-acclaimed restaurants found at the Women’s Craft Centre and at Heritage Village.
