Camel safaris: for a unique way of touring around the attractions in the Abu Dhabi area, guided trips on camel-back are gaining in popularity with visitors. Several tour operators provide safaris of varying length to many stunning locations nearby, including the desert oases of Al Ain and Liwa.
Dhow cruises: are a comfortable and quiet way of touring around the islands and the waters surrounding Abu Dhabi. These authentic reproductions of centuries-old traditional sailing vessels are stable and seaworthy, and will take you through channels where you’ll see a variety of birds and marine life.
Just off the coastline are numerous small islands that have shallow channels and lagoons creating great snorkelling conditions; and a number of coral reefs, deep-water trenches and submerged wrecks make for excellent scuba diving. Divers of all ability levels will be able to enjoy their sport here; and reputable dive shops and equipment hire companies are plentiful.
Wadi-bashing: involves navigating 4-wheel-drive vehicles along dry and stony river beds, and can be great fun for visitors looking for an extreme adventure. There are a number of tour operators around Abu Dhabi that arrange wadi-bashing outings, with most suitable areas not more than an hour away from the city centre.
The Old Souq, located in the north-western sector of the city, is the oldest and most popular of the traditional markets in Abu Dhabi. It features goods of all sorts, from food and clothing to electronics and gems. Along Al Nasr street there’s another popular market area, where you’ll find an interesting selection of antiques and jewellery shops.
The most popular items for visitors include carpets, gold and silver jewellery, ornamental daggers, perfume oils, silk, tapestries and worry beads. You’ll also find an incredible variety of ‘antiques’ for sale, but you are advised that many are not as ‘antique’ as the dealers claim.
You may find that shop clerks are a bit on the pushy side, as they will stay close by you and actively try to sell their goods. It’s a good idea to be polite, while at the same time taking your time deciding what you would like to purchase.
Abu Dhabi’s incredible annual Shopping Festival is held in March, making this the perfect time for serious shoppers to visit. You’ll find an unbelievable range of quality merchandise for sale, at some of the lowest prices you’ll find anywhere in the world.
