Introduction to Dubai - Palm Jumeirah
The Palm Jumeirah is one of three sets of artificial archipelagos off the coast of Dubai. When the islands were developed, the length of Dubai's coastline doubled in size, leading many to dub the archipelago as the 'Eighth Wonder of the World'. As the name suggests, the islands have a palm shape and were the first of the three to open in Dubai. They are connected to the mainland by a state-of-the-art monorail system, linking the mainland's Gateway Towers with one of the top Palm Jumeirah hotels. Travellers can also get here by driving across the freeway bridge. On arrival, guests will find that the islands boast luxury retail outlets and trendy marinas among other exclusive amenities. In addition, two fighter jets have also been sunk off the islands in order to entertain visiting scuba divers.
