Introduction to Istanbul, Turkey
The Turkish city of Istanbul sits on the Bosphorus, where east meets west. This cultural mix is evident everywhere, with ancient bazaars just a short distance from contemporary shopping centres. The sprawling metropolis has abundant accommodation choices in all of its districts. The Old City, or Sultanahmet, on the west bank of the Bosphorus contains many of the city tourism draws and has an abundance of Istanbul hotels, ranging from budget hostels to traditional establishments offering luxury and full amenities. The Blue Mosque, named after the blue tiles that adorn it; Hagia Sophia, a church-turned-mosque; and the one-time home to Ottoman rules, Topkapi Palace, are within walking distance. Arasta Bazaar is beside the mosque and vendors here sell carpets, cloth and unique souvenirs from Turkey. Istanbul's famed Grand Bazaar, the world's biggest indoor market, is a 20-minute walk away. It is spread over 60 streets and has around 5,000 stalls, cafes and restaurants. Heading over to Galata District, on the opposite bank of the Bosphorus via Galata Bridge, allows visitors to amble around Taksim Square and Independence Avenue. The square hosts the Independence Monument, while the avenue is a pedestrian precinct lined with galleries, snack bars and boutiques. Visit our Istanbul Travel Guide
