Introduction to Istanbul - Galata
Galata lies on Istanbul's European side, both culturally and geographically. It is a neighbourhood in the city's Beyoglu district, on the Golden Horn's northern shore, with an inlet which comes between it and the historic peninsula of Constantinople. Several bridges cross the Golden Horn, with Galata Bridge being the most famous of these. Galata Tower was erected in 1348 and is at the highest and northernmost point of the citadel. It is one of the city's most impressive monuments and provides an excellent view over Istanbul from the top. The neighbourhood has been an active business centre since being established. Galata hotels are found throughout the neighbourhood, with a mixture of upmarket and budget styled choices. Perhaps one of the reasons the name of the district is so well known is because of the famous Galatasaray football club, which took its name from the neighbourhood after being established in nearby Galatasaray Square.Visit our Istanbul Travel Guide
