The Mediterranean port city of Iskenderun rests at the base of the Nur Mountains in Turkey's Hatay Province. As the province's leading commercial centre, it sees a large amount of trade, especially at its busy port. Due to the city's industrial character, tourism here is low-key, but there is an adequate selection of comfortable Iskenderun hotels to choose from, particularly along the palm-backed seafront. For beaches, most visitors head south to Arsuz where the sand is soft and the water warm. For a break from beach life, it is possible to retreat to the cool mountain resort of Sogukoluk, a short drive away. In the city itself are a handful of interesting cultural stops for history buffs, from the Cathedral of the Annunciation to the restored Bakras Castle. Twenty kilometres away, the Sokollu Mehmet Pasha Complex is perhaps the historical highlight; a 16th century Ottoman complex including an inn, a bazaar, a mosque, a madrasa and a bath.
