The city of Gaziantep has its roots in ancient times but, today, modern attractions are equal in number.

This interesting base in South Anatolia offers historic landmarks spanning antiquity through to the Ottoman era, including a bustling bazaar.

More than half-a-dozen museums make this a city a must-visit for the history lover, with everything from ethnography to archeology covered.

But it is the city's historical sites themselves that allow visitors to really soak up Gaziantep's extensive story first hand.

The Citadel, marking the centre, is within walking distance of the centuries-old churches of Kendirli and Aziz Bedros and several Gaziantep hotels, while nearby Doliche and its ancient artefacts transport visitors back 30,000 years to a time when stone tools were used.

Historical inns, or caravanserai, are another feature of the city, with a handful restored to their original state of preservation.

The city's airport is one way of arriving but, more commonly, people get here by train from Istanbul or across the border in Syria.
