Introduction to Canakkale - City Centre
With territory in both Europe and Asia, the port city of Canakkale has long been an important crossroads between the two continents. It is the closest city to the ruins of Troy and the Gallipoli battlefields, providing a useful base for exploring these and a number of other historic sites in the area. The seaside Cimenlik Castle is the most impressive attraction in the city, with towering ramparts overlooking the sea. The local Archaeological Museum does a very good job of displaying the rich heritage of this part of Turkey through its many artefacts unearthed during excavations. The Naval Museum is another important venue worth checking out if you have an interest in WWI naval history. Nearly all of the attractions and amenities in Canakkale are within walking distance of its compact city centre.
