Introduction to Afyon, Turkey

Afyon is the short name for the Turkish city of Afyonkarahisar, which is located towards the west of the country, inland from the Aegean coastline and in mountainous countryside. This city of around 175,000 people is famous for the world renowned Turkish Delight, some of which is made with the rich clotted cream that is produced locally. Legend states that the cattle produce this clotted cream after feeding on the leftover opium poppy plants which are grown in abundance in Afyon. The city has a country town feel as it is in the centre of a major agricultural area. It is not known for being a lively city, yet due to its location halfway between Izmir and Ankara, many people use it as a stop-off place on journeys between these two locations. There are numerous accommodation options, with Afyon hotels, guesthouses and bed and breakfasts all available at affordable rates. There are also plenty of restaurants to choose from where sucuk, the local spicy beef sausage, is worth sampling.
