By air: Tunis Carthage International Airport is the chief gateway not only to the city of Tunis but to the entire country and is a large facility located eight kilometres northeast of the city. Connections are maintained with a large number of European destinations as well as some major Middle Eastern cities.
By train: SNCFT operates internal rail services between Tunis and most major cities in the country with the main line running to Gabes and travelling via Sousse, Sfax and Gafsa. Trains are graded with those in the higher classes offering air conditioning and comfortable seating. Tickets should be but before boarding else the fare on board is double the regular ticket price.
By bus: internal bus services are operated by SNTRI and are easily spotted by their green and yellow exteriors. Services operate between major cities and Tunis’ Bab Alleoua bus station. While buses are cheap, they are invariably crowded and are perhaps not the most comfortable form of transportation.
By road: driving in Tunisia is not for the feint-hearted, with roads presenting pretty hazardous conditions on the whole and very little in the way of observance of driving laws by the locals. Still, those visitors brave enough to tackle the chaos will find Tunis is relatively well connected to other major cities via the country’s motorway network. Traffic in Tunisia drives on the right-hand side.
