Bizerte: located about 65km north of Tunis, Bizerte offers visitors a chance to see something of the real Tunisia without tourist influence. The old medina is the most fascinating part of the city and few will want to miss out on a chance to check out its magnificent Kasbah which was built by the Ottomans on the site of a 6th century Byzantine fort.
Thuburbo Majus: located 70km from Tunis, Thuburbo is a large Roman site which dates originally back to the period between 150 and 200 AD, with restorations made in the 4th century following 3rd century damage. The site has a variety of notable features including a tetrastyle temple that was originally decorated with icons of the gods Apollo and Venus and other famous characters.
Dougga: another set of Roman ruins, but those at this particular location are especially well preserved and offer a glimpse of facilities such as sewage, piped water and steam baths that illustrate the advancement and civilisation of the Romans.
