Introduction to Tunis, Tunisia
What Tunis lacks in stunning beaches is fully compensated by its lack of overt tourism seen in the resorts to its south and north. Visitors to the Tunisian capital are likely to be heading to the spectacular ruins of ancient Carthage by way of a quick visit to the city's hassle-free, authentic souk. The Medina and the new city are separate from the other, with both giving a view of Tunis' development over the centuries. Getting around is easy via the four-line metro, the suburban train routes or local buses and taxis. For history buffs, the Bardo Museum combines a glorious 13th century Ottoman palace with a fine collection of Roman mosaics, artefacts from Carthage and Arab cultural objects old and new. The quaint, small folk museum of Dar Ben Abdallah is set in an 18th century palace and contains artefacts and furnishings displaying the everyday life of a rich merchant. Two important monuments, the Cathedral of St Vincent de Paul and the 1,200-year-old Zitouna Mosque, surrounded by souks, are set close to a number of Tunis hotels.Visit our Tunis Travel Guide
