Introduction to Tunis - City Centre
Tunis is Tunisia's capital and by far its most vibrant and diverse city. At its heart is the ancient Medina, built along a gentle slope that runs to Tunis Lake. The city's most impressive monuments and palaces are here, including must-see attractions such as the Dar Ben Abdallah and Dar Hussein palaces, the mausoleum of Tourbet El Bey and striking mosques such as Zitouna Mosque. Cutting through the city centre is Bourguiba Avenue, a broad thoroughfare modeled after those in France. This is where you can find many of Tunis City Centre hotels and some of the capital's finest restaurants and shops. The city centre is also the ideal place to explore the many traditional souks, where shopping ranges from gold to hand-woven carpets. Large public parks such as Belvedere Park also grace the downtown core.
