Introduction to Tataouine, Tunisia

Unlike its planetary counterpart 'Tatooine' in the Star Wars movies, the city of Tataouine is located here on Earth, in the North African country of Tunisia. While filming for the Star Wars planet was not actually done here, this habitation is still an important pilgrimage site for lovers of these landmark films. Most of the leading hotels in Tataouine offer guests a wide range of services, including guided tours of the area. A key attraction to be explored is the 15th century fortified granary of Ksar Ouled Soltane. Located on the summit of a hill, this site offers stunning views of the surrounding area and also incidentally was the film location for the slave quarters in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. This has put Tataouine firmly on the tourist map. The abandoned Berber town of Dourit is another highly recommended attraction for visitors, while those who have private transportation will be able to head on over to the nearby village of Chenini; a great place to stop for lunch.
