Introduction to Sousse, Tunisia
One of the most popular Tunisian destinations for visitors from northern climes is the ancient city of Sousse, with its authentic Medina now UNESCO World Heritage listed. Set on the coast, the city holds good beaches lapped by clear azure seas. Not as touristy as its southern neighbour of Monastir, it is still well-placed for road and rail transportation around the region. All of the city's historic sites are located within the Medina, with most Sousse hotels set close to or on the beaches. In the heart of the Medina is the Grand Mosque, a tranquil 1,000-year-old haven from the noise of the frantic city. Built in the austere Aghlabite style with elegant curved arches, it is a trip back in time to the early beginnings of Islam. For a truly traditional experience, the Tunisian House, just inside the city walls, was the home of a long-standing local family until its last member died. It is now a nostalgic and totally authentic museum of Sousse life. Visit our Sousse Travel Guide
