Introduction to Monastir - Skanes
Skanes is a small beach resort hamlet about 10 minutes from the larger Tunisian town of Monastir. They are basically the same town, just separated by a stretch of beach. Skanes hotels dominate the coastline, taking full advantage of the amazing beaches and offering a great selection of water activities for their guests. Other sports on offer include volley ball, petanque, horse and camel riding, or go-karting. You can also rent dune buggies. There are plenty of choices in Skanes for a bite to eat or some shopping, but much more awaits just down the road in Monastir, a town dating way back to Phoenician times. Its Ribat fortress is particularly amazing and perfectly preserved; visitors can explore its ramparts and enjoy fine views of the sea. The Mausoleum of Bourguiba is another popular attraction in the town. When shopping for traditional goods like carpets, leather and pottery, head to the souk for a real traditional North African market experience.
