Introduction to Gammarth - Beach
Dense forest grows around the Mediterranean Sea resort of Gammarth, situated on the shores of northeast Tunisia. Gammarth Beach hotels are conveniently situated near both the ancient Roman city of Carthage and Tunisia's modern capital of Tunis. This former fishing village welcomed its first foreign tourists during the 1950s, after Tunisia became an independent nation. Today, this Carthage Coast resort is often compared to French Riviera resorts for its luxurious atmosphere and beautiful beaches. This hillside community next to the Gulf of Tunis is also filled with history, especially the recently excavated ancient burial chambers and catacombs estimated to date back to the 2nd century. A much more recent military cemetery was established to honour the French soldiers who died in the area during WWII.
