Introduction to Djerba - Houmt Souk
Djerba is a Tunisian Mediterranean Sea island that is linked to the mainland by a causeway, originally built in Roman times. Houmt Souk, which translates as 'market quarter', is the island's principal town and is located on the seaward facing side of the island. The town is an atmospheric place with a mix of religious edifices, including Jemaa El Ghorba Mosque and whitewashed churches. There is a varied choice of Houmt Souk hotels in town which range in standard from traditional inns to palatial lodgings. Staying here is a good choice for exploring the island or for travellers arriving at the international airport, four kilometres east, as an overnight stop before onward travel. Attractions and activities in the town itself are the 15th century Borj El K'bir castle, strolling the colourful souks, shopping, dining and visiting the magnificent art and culture museum.
