Unspoiled nature, outdoor activities and Civil War history is what attracts visitors to West Virginia. Nestled in the eastern part of the United States, West Virginia is probably best known for its natural resources and mining. The state offers numerous national parks and protected areas for visitors, the most popular being the Appalachian National Scenic Trail, the C&O Canal National Historical Park and Ohio River Islands National Wildlife Refuge. The most famous Civil War attraction is the quaint historic town of Harpers Ferry. Here, visitors can see what life was like during the Civil War. Although Morgantown is the major university town, Charleston is the capital and largest city in West Virginia. There is a regional airport in Charleston.
