One of the Midwest?s lesser known states, South Dakota is often overshadowed by its neighbours: North Dakota, Nebraska, Iowa and Minnesota. The few tourists that trickle through the state are often overwhelmed by the vast expanse that is the Great Plains, though it is the seemingly never-ending landscape that is also one of its greatest appeals. This primarily agricultural state is not the place to come for buzzing nightlife, yet the capital Pierre and the larger Sioux Falls have a few choices. Instead, come here for the Badlands and Wind Cave national parks or the well-known Mount Rushmore National Memorial, where the portraits of four US presidents are carved into the rock face.
