Minnesota feels as if it?s a million miles from the rest of the American midwest. The northern-most state in the continental US, Minnesota has much more in common with Canada, its neighbour to the north. Its stunning scenery and the odd twang in the speech of its residents add to the similarities. The state is called the ?land of 10,000 lakes? and attracts thousands of visitors each year for winter sports, camping, hunting, fishing and boating. Minneapolis is a Native American word meaning ?city of lakes.? It?s the largest city in the state, offering up the cultures and cuisines of its many immigrants groups. Sushi exists comfortably alongside pizza, while Vietnamese markets are found adjacent to European bakeries. The city?s twin is St Paul, located to the east, and is filled with fine examples of 19th and early 20th century architecture.
