In many ways the building represents the changing faces of Istanbul itself. The city has over its long existence served as the capital of four vastly different empires; the last being the Ottoman Empire, which in its heyday was among the most powerful civilisations on the planet. The diversity and staying power is evident across Istanbul, a city that has done well to collect and preserve monuments representing these different chapters of its past.
