Australasia is a massive region, encompassing everything from the colourful indigenous tribes
of Papua New Guinea (PNG) jungles to the vast barren outback in the heart of Australia
and dozens of sparkling islands in the Pacific. New Zealand is fast becoming the real star
of this region. The jaw-dropping scenery of the country's two islands is superlative on all levels.
If you've seen Lord of the Rings, you've got the idea. But don't write off Australia.
The land down under still boasts some world-class sites such as the Cape Tribulation region,
the Great Barrier Reef and mysterious Ayer's Rock. But if it's real adventure you're after,
head to PNG. Travel guides that cover the whole region are hard to find, but Frommer's
offers a guide to Australiasia. Lonely Planet has a guidebook for the Pacific,
and Map Town produces quality maps to accompany its guides. It's best to buy a guidebook
or map for individual countries, as these provide much greater detail and information.
