Having served as a hub of business and commerce between Thais and foreigners for two centuries, Bangkok had its first contact with western influence during the reign of King Rama V in the mid-18th century. Its origins however date back to 1769, when King Taksin set up a temporary new capital across the river at Thonburi following the sacking of Ayuthaya by the Burmese.
