Lying in an inhospitable region of the world – nestled between China and Russia - Mongolia is one for the hardy traveller who is not too concerned about creature comforts. Mongolia is a massive country and there is much to see, although internal travel can be tough and tourists pay a higher rate than locals. The Gobi Desert is one of the most barren places on earth, while centuries-old nomadic customs and an abundance of wildlife are in evidence. Major attractions include the capital Ulan Bator in the northeast, where some luxury can be had, Genghis Khan’s Karakorum, Khuvsgul lake, the Gorkhi-Terelj valley, and the lofty Khorgo volcano. Having a thick skin is a good idea; expect to be prodded and pushed while queuing for instance.
