The island has overcome many struggles in the past as. The Javanese, Dutch and British have all administered the island and legacies from this period can still be seen. Bali was not even spared when Indonesia gained its independence. Thousands were killed here after the failed coup in Jakarta. With each struggle however, the community of Bali only grew more determined to work together and heal the damage. This attitude supported Bali in quickly recovering from the destruction caused by the terrorist bombings and the tsunami. Today, it is the largest tourist destination in Indonesia.
