Sub-Saharan Africa has the highest rate of HIV and AIDS on the planet, levels of crime are astronomical in almost all cities outside of Cape Town, and the high level of road traffic accidents is also cause for concern for those planning on driving. Although the threat is small, those on safari have a slim chance of being attacked by a wild animal. Most major African cities have several government hospitals which are generally overcrowded and lacking in staff, yet there are a growing number of international-standard private facilities in the higher-profile tourist cities. Prices are a lot higher in these places, however, and the need for good travel insurance goes without saying.
