With its own national park comprised of 70 square miles of scenic plains, cliffs and forestland, the Kenyan capital city Nairobi is also commonly referred to as the safari capital of Africa. Besides the fascinating flora and fauna of Nairobi National Park and the equally interesting Ol Donyo Sabuk National Park, the city has a wealth of other attractions including culturally informative centres such as the Nairobi National Museum, National Railway Museum, Karen Blixen Museum and the unique Bomas of Kenya. Also well worth a visit are the picturesque Uhuru Gardens which are lovingly tended and feature some intricate landscaping, pretty water fountains and the 24-metre high Uhuru Monument built to commemorate the country’s independence, which was achieved in 1963. The Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage near Nairobi National Park and the Giraffe Center in Langata offer good opportunities to see local wildlife in alternative settings to those offered by safaris.
