Nuku’Alofa is the largest city and the capital of Tonga. It is the industrial and commercial hub of Tonga also and around a third of the entire population of Tonga live in Nuku’Alofa. It is the first port of call for many new arrivals and so there is no shortage of hotels in Nuku’Alofa which are largely modest places offering comfortable standard accommodations with ceiling fan or air conditioning to guard against the tropical heat and humidity. The Tonga Royal Palace is here, and it can be found under the correct Tongan name of Sia ko Veriongo. Some Nuku’Alofa hotels are located near the Royal Palace while others are closer to the downtown area. Some Nuku’Alofa hotels are near the bus station on Vuna Road which is the main transport interchange in the country. Others are closer to the Talamahu Market which is a very busy and entertaining place to spend a weekend morning.
